Essential info

The local authority responsible for properties is the City of York Council

The local area

Standing at the confluence of the Ouse and Foss rivers, York is a place with a long and storied past. The centre is enclosed by medieval walls, while the magnificent Gothic cathedral York Minster is a dominating presence, along with York Castle. For a dose of natural beauty, not far from the city is the North York Moors National Park.

It’s fairly easy to drive to nearby towns such as Harrogate, Pontefract, Morley and Pudsey, or you can take the A64 to get to the North York Moors, which continues on to coastal Scarborough to the west, or Leeds to the east. The A1(M) and M1 motorways are also found around 10 miles to the east of York, while the trans-pennine M62 is a little further away. York has traditionally been a major railway centre, with a journey to London taking around two hours. There are regular direct services to Manchester Airport (the north of England’s principal airport) from York.

Families with children have a range of good schools to choose from in the area, including Dunnington Church of England Primary, Hempland Primary, York High School and the Mount School. The University of York’s main campus is found on the southern edge of the city in Heslington.
