The local area

With a name first recorded as ‘Bromwic’ in the Domesday Book of 1086, there was a Benedictine priory in the local area from the 12th century, which brought about the Broomwich Heath settlement. West Bromwich became a stop on the coaching road from London to Shrewsbury in the early part of the 18th century, which brought lots of growth to the area. In the years that followed, the town expanded as an industrial centre thanks to the local coal mining industry. The modern West Bromwich is equipped with amenities such as the Queens Square shopping centre, as well as a historic football team that plays in the English Premier League.

West Bromwich has a great location within the West Midlands. The centre of Birmingham is little over five miles away, and can be reached by using the Midland Metro system, which also connects the town to Wolverhampton. West Bromwich is conveniently close to the M5 and M6 motorways, there are good roads to local towns like Smethwick, Walsall, and Tamworth, while Birmingham Airport is just over 20 miles away. There are trains to the airport from Sandwell and Dudley station which take just over 20 minutes.

For families with children, there’s a choice of over 20 primary schools in West Bromwich, including St John Bosco Catholic Primary, Harvills Hawthorn Primary and All Saints CofE. Sandwell Academy and George Salter Academy are among the secondary options, while Sandwell College is a modern provider of further education in the town.
