The local area

With evidence of a local Iron Age settlement in the area, the Romans also built a town called Tripontium a few miles from where the modern Rugby lies. Granted a market charter in 1255, the West Midlands town is most famous for being the birthplace of rugby, one of the world’s most popular sports. Also known for being a key player in the development of the jet engine, the modern town has plenty of amenities including a good range of pubs and the Clock Towers indoor shopping centre.

Sitting in the eastern reaches of Warwickshire, Rugby is around 13 miles from Coventry, which can be reached in less than half an hour by car or just over ten minutes on the train. Its also fairly easy to get to Leicester, the rural Harborough district, Warwick, Nuneaton and on to Kenilworth and Stratford, while Birmingham is an hours drive, with trains available to the city which take around 35 minutes. If you want to get to London, Euston can be reached in just over 50 minutes, making Rugby a viable place to live if you want to commute to the capital. The town is also well placed for the M6 and M1 motorways, while Birmingham Airport is less than 30 miles away.

There’s an excellent range of highly rated schools in the local area for families with children to choose between. Some of the best primary options include Knightlow CofE, Long Lawford Primary, Paddox Primary and Dunchurch Boughton CofE. At secondary level, Lawrence Sheriff School is one of the country’s top performing schools which looks after boys only, while Rugby High School is the girls’ equivalent and also performs very well. Rugby School is a historic public school, with other options including Ahslawn School and the Avon Valley School and Performing Arts College.
