Essential info

Wigan Council are the local authority responsible for property in the town.

The local area

Wigan finds itself inside the borders of Greater Manchester. It’s this proximity to the city that saw Wigan boom in the industrial revolution, becoming a mill town – a history still evident in the area’s architecture today. Central Wigan offers lots of amenities like trendy bars and high street restaurants, while the surrounding landscapes offer up golf courses and country parks, including Haigh Woodland and Winstanley Park.

Wigan is well connected if you need to travel out of and into town on a regular basis. The M6 motorway passes to the town’s west, while the M58 provides fast access to Liverpool. The two central rail stations provide frequent services to both Manchester and Liverpool, as well as onto the capital via the West Coast Mainline. Manchester and Liverpool’s airports are almost equal in distance from Wigan, however travellers may wish to take advantage of the long-haul routes served at the former. It’s also fairly easy to travel to nearby towns, including Leigh and Atherton, and slightly further afield to St. Helens and Bolton.

For those with kids, you’ll be pleased to hear there are lots of good schools in the area. Primary schools include Bickershaw CofE and Garrett Hall, while Golborne High and Standish Community High are among the best secondary options. For higher education, Wigan and Leigh College run three campuses in the town.
