The local area
Carlisle’s ancient history encompasses its status as a prominent stronghold of Roman Britain, while more recently the Industrial Revolution transformed Carlisle into a densely populated mill town thanks to the introduction of textile manufacturing. Nowadays Carlisle is Cumbria’s only city, and offers a compact city centre with draws such as Carlisle Cathedral, a 19th century citadel and the Tuille House Museum and Art Gallery.
The city is linked to the national motorway network by the M6, which skirts around Carlisle and heads south towards Manchester, Liverpool and Birmingham, and north into Scotland. The A69 meanwhile heads east across the country to Newcastle. Manchester Piccadilly can be reached in under two hours, while it’s a similar length journey to get to Glasgow. The Lake District town of Kendal is a short drive away, as is Whitehaven, on the Cumbrian coast.
There are some excellent schools in the area that will please families with children, including Stanwix Primary, Kirkbampton C of E and Ivegill C of E for those of a younger age. Secondary options include Trinity School on Strand Road, Newman Catholic School and Dalston’s Caldew School, while the University of Cumbria has four campuses in Carlisle.
