The local area
Hampshire takes its name from the old settlement of Hamtun, which is now the city of Southampton. The largest county in South East England, it has a range of natural attractions including an array of seaside resorts and two national parks, the New Forest and the South Downs. With a strong maritime history, Hampshire boasts two of Europe’s biggest ports along its coastline, Southampton and Portsmouth.
There are good transport links around Hampshire, which has a wide range of rail services connecting its towns and cities. If you want to get to London, services from Winchester take just over an hour, while it’s another 20 minutes from Southampton and 20 minutes more from Portsmouth. The M3 motorway connects Southampton and other parts of Hampshire to the capital, while the M27 and A3(M) are other major roads in the county. If you want to go on holiday, Southampton has its own airport, while places in the northeast of the county are conveniently located for Heathrow Airport.
When it comes to education, Hampshire has a great choice of facilities.
