The local area
Dover has long been an important place thanks to its strategic position, as it sits at the narrowest point of the English Channel across from France. Famous for the iconic White Cliffs of Dover, the Port of Dover provides quick and easy access to the French town of Calais. As well as the picture-perfect coastline, there’s some lovely countryside to explore in the local area, including the Kent Downs, while the town has plenty of modern amenities as well as interesting landmarks such as Dover Castle and Dover Museum, and a lovely seafront promenade.
If you want to catch one of those ferries over to Calais, the crossing takes just an hour and a half, making a day trip over to northeast France perfectly feasible. Back on the English coast, the A20 runs west from Dover to Folkestone where it leads to the M20 motorway, which can be used to get to London. Nearby towns, such as Deal, are fairly easy to drive to. There are trains to the capital’s St Pancras station which take just over an hour, while there are direct services to other London stations which take longer.
There are around 15 primary schools in Dover for families with children to choose between, including Sibertswold CofE, Harbour School and Lydden at primary level. Secondary choices include St Edmund’s Catholic School, Dover Christ Church Academy and Astor College, while Dover also has grammar schools for both boys and girls, and Dover College is a private school for children aged between three and 18.
