The local area

Legend has it that the Irish Saint Ia arrived in Cornwall in the fifth century, and the town of St Ives has been named after her. Fishing was for a long time the most important industry to the town, but as this declined the importance of tourism grew, with St Ives thought of as being one of Britain’s best seaside resorts. With a lovely sandy beach and swathes of beautiful countryside inland, it’s the perfect place to live if you like to spend your time outdoors.

St Ives has its own train station right next to Porthminster Beach, although services aren’t particularly frequent either for getting to other parts of Cornwall or further afield. The nearest major road is the A30 which heads to Penzance to the south, and dissects the county on its way to Exeter in the opposite direction. The nearest airport to St Ives is in Newquay, which offers services to other UK airports as well as European destinations like Alicante and Frankfurt.

For families with kids, there are two schools for younger children in the town to choose between, St Ives Junior School and St Uny CofE. At secondary level, St Ives School is the only local option, a mixed school which looks after children aged between 11 and 16.
