The local area

With a six acre mere in the heart of town, Diss takes its name from the Anglo-Saxon word meaning ditch or embankment. The town was first granted its market charter by Richard the Lionheart in the 12th century, while there’s a museum and a number of historic buildings to explore, including an early 14th century parish church.

Diss has its own train station in the east of town, which is on the Great Eastern Main Line and can be used to get to places such as Norwich. This is a 20 minute journey away from Diss, while there are direct services to London’s Liverpool Street station which take just over an hour and a half. Due to its rural location, there aren’t any motorways close to Diss, which is connected to other parts of East Anglia by a network of A roads. The closest major airport is London Stansted, around 70 miles away by road.

There are some highly rated schools in Diss and the surrounding local area, including Roydon Primary School in neighbouring Roydon. Diss CofE provides education for children aged between seven and 11, while Diss Infant and Nursery School also has a children’s centre to help with looking after your youngsters. For those looking for secondary education, the town has Diss High School on Walcot Road.
