The local area

The first mention of Hitchin dates back to the seventh century, while by the time of the Domesday Book of 1086 the town had a status as a royal manor. Named after the River Hiz which feeds into the River Ivel, the town bears evidence of its prosperity in the wool trade, including the huge St Mary’s Church. The modern town has a good range of amenities, as well as excellent transport links.

There are direct rail services to London King’s Cross which take less than 30 minutes, making Hitchin a popular place to live among commuters to the capital. The A1(M) motorway passes to the east of town heading south to the M25 and London, while the M1 runs to the west. It’s also fairly easy to get to nearby towns such as Stevenage, Welwyn Garden City, Hertford and Hemel Hempstead. If you want to go on holiday, Hitchin is conveniently located close to London Luton Airport, which is less than ten miles away.

For families with children, there are a number of excellent schools in the local area to choose between. Highly rated options at primary level include St Ippolyts CofE, William Ransom Primary, Codicote CofE and Ickleford Primary on Arlesey Road. Secondary choices include Hitchin Boys’ School, Hitchin Girls’ School and the Priory School on Bedford Road.
