With evidence of prehistoric human settlement in the local area, the Celtic Brigantes tribe called this part of Yorkshire their home until the Roman occupation in the first century AD. Known as the ‘Merrie City’ in the Middle Ages, the Battle of Wakefield was fought during the War of the Roses and the city was a Royalist stronghold in the English Civil War. With good supplies of fish thanks to the River Calder, Wakefield prospered from its corn, coal mining and textiles in the 18th century and became a wealthy market town thanks to the Industrial Revolution.

The modern city has seen plenty of regeneration, including the Trinity Walk shopping centre, and has all the amenities you need. It also has a great location within Yorkshire around ten miles south of Leeds, with trains from Wakefield Westgate station taking around 15 minutes, and five minutes more from Wakefield Kirkgate.
