The local area

With a history that dates back at least as far as Roman times when this part of Lincolnshire was important in the production of salt, Spalding takes its name from an Anglian tribe who lived in the area in the sixth century.

The town was known for the annual Spalding Flower Parade, which began back in 1959 but ended in 2013 to be replaced by the smaller Springfields Festival. As well as plenty of modern amenities, there’s a good selection of schools for families with children to select from in the local area. Primary options include St Norbert’s Catholic Primary, Pinchbeck East CofE and Weston Hills CofE, while Spalding Grammar is a secondary school for boys and Spalding High its equivalent for girls. Sir John Gleed School is a mixed secondary school which has a sixth form and provides an alternative to the local grammar schools.

Due to Spalding’s location in a rural part of England, there are no motorways within close range of the town. The A1 does pass to the west though, which provides easy access to London in the south and to places like Leeds and Newcastle to the north, and there are plenty of A-roads you can use to get around to places like Bourne. Spalding has its own train station on the Lincoln Central to Peterborough Line, with services to Peterborough taking around 20 minutes. It’s also possible to drive a bit further to the coast at Grimsby.
