The local area
Officially called Kingston upon Hull, the town was originally founded in the late-12th century, and gained its city status around 700 years later. Hull has a long history as a port, a strong whaling and fishing heritage, and was severely affected by Second World War bombing due to its close proximity to mainland Europe. Nowadays it remains a diverse port and is undergoing urban regeneration. Hull will also be the 2017 European Capital of Culture.
The Humber Bridge is a feature of the local area, which provides access from Hull to regions south of the Humber river and links the city to the M180 motorway. The M62 has its eastern origins just to the west of Hull, connecting the city to Leeds, Manchester and Liverpool. Local towns like Scunthorpe are fairly easy to drive to. Leeds can be reached in under an hour by train, while its double this to Manchester.
There is a range of excellent schools in the area for families with children to take heart in, with primary options including Gillshill Primary on Cavendish Road, Spring Cottage Primary and Highlands Primary. Choices at secondary level include St Mary’s College, Archbishop Sentamu Academy and Sirius Academy, while the University of Hull has a student population of around 20,000.
