The local area

With potential evidence of a flint industry in the local area dating back to Mesolithic times, Lichfield is a place that has long been settled. The city itself was perhaps born as a result of a local Roman fort being abandoned, and was first mentioned in the year 669. Lichfield Cathedral is a real focal point and feature of the city, a three-spired medieval effort which built in a Gothic style.

As well as the cathedral, there are more than 200 listed buildings in the centre of Lichfield, including example of Georgian architecture which give the city a lovely feel.

Lichfield benefits from a great location surrounded by swathes of pretty countryside, while Birmingham is less than 20 miles to the south. There are also good roads to nearby towns such as Tamworth, Cannock, Walsall and West Bromwich. There are train services to Birmingham New Street which take just over half an hour. The M6 motorway isn’t far from Lichfield, while the city’s conveniently located close to Birmingham Airport for when you want to go on holiday.

There’s a good selection of schools in the local area for families with children to take into consideration, including St Joseph’s Primary, Christ Church CofE and Chadsmead Primary. For older children, the Friary School, King Edward VI School and Nether Stowe School are among the choices, while the city is home to a campus of Staffordshire University for higher education.
