The local area

With a history that stretches back to Anglo-Saxon times, Dudley was a major market town during the Middle Ages. Its population expanded rapidly during the Industrial Revolution thanks to an importance within the coal, limestone, iron, steel, engineering and textile industries among others. Dudley is in fact regarded as one of the birthplaces of the Industrial Revolution. The town’s modern amenities include the Merry Hill Shopping Centre, where there’s more than 250 shops and a cinema.

Dudley has a strong location close to Birmingham, while Wolverhampton is just over five miles away, and its a fairly short drive to other local towns such as Halesowen, Shirley and Sutton Coldfield. Trains from Sandwell and Dudley station to Birmingham New Street take less than ten minutes, while it’s around 15 minutes from Dudley Port station. Services to Wolverhampton take a similar time. The M5 motorway passes to the east of Dudley, connecting the town to the national motorway network.

There are plenty of good schools in the area for families with children to consider, with primary options including Dudley Wood Primary, Kates Hill Primary, Russells Hall and Milking Bank Primary. The Holly Hall Academy, Bishop Milner Catholic School and Castle High School and Visual Arts College are among the choices at secondary level. The Old Park School is among Dudley’s schools for children with special education needs, while Dudley College provides further education in the north of the town centre.
