The local area
Pronounced in Welsh as Pen-y-bont ar Ogwr, meaning the ‘end of the bridge on the Ogmore’, Bridgend is just a few miles from the south coast of Wales. With a picturesque coastline, sandy beaches and swathes of pretty countryside in the area, Bridgend is ideal for the outdoors type. There’s plenty of history to explore across the region, as well as modern amenities such as the Rhiw Shopping Centre, which contains Bridgend Market.
Bridgend sits in between the two biggest Welsh cities, Cardiff and Swansea. The former is less than 20 miles to the east, while the latter is a similar distance to the west. Trains to Cardiff take around 20 minutes, while it’s a touch longer to get to Swansea, with both cities perfectly suited for a commute. The M4 motorway connects Bridgend to its two larger neighbours, and also provides easy access east into England towards Bristol, Reading and London.
There are plenty of schools for families to choose from in the local area, including Betws Primary, Coety Primary and Pencoed Junior School for younger children. Brynteg Comprehensive, Bryntirion Comprehensive and Archbishop McGrath Catholic High School are among the options at secondary level, while Bridgend College provides further and higher education facilities.
