The local area
With the Kents Cavern cave system located in Torquay, there’s evidence that the Torbay area has been settled since Palaeolithic times. The region grew up as a fishing and agricultural area, but as travel around Britain began to open up in the early part of the 18th century, it became popular as a seaside resort. This popularity remains to this day, thanks to the sandy beaches, good weather and great range of attractions in the area.
As Torbay is quite far flung on the southwest English coast, it can feel a little bit isolated when it comes to transport links. The nearest motorway is the M5 which begins at Exeter to the north, and it’s here you’ll find the nearest airport, from which you can fly to European destinations such as Palma de Mallorca, Amsterdam and Paris, as well as other UK airports. There are a number of train stations on the across the borough, including Torquay, Torre and Paignton, with services to Exeter taking in the region of half an hour.
There are plenty of schools in the area for families with children to take a look at, including Eden Park Primary, Oldway Primary and White Rock Primary. For older pupils, Churston Ferrers Grammar is in Brixham, while Torquay offers separate grammar schools for boys and girls. Paignton Academy, Torquay Academy and Brixham College are among the non-selective secondary options, while South Devon College provides further education facilities.
