The local area
With a history stretching back to its use as a quarry back in Roman times, it was the coal mining which began in the 16th century which brought major growth to Nailsea. This in turn led to prominence in glass manufacture, with the Nailsea Glassworks becoming the fourth-largest of its kind in the UK. The modern town relies more on the service sector, while its close proximity to both Bristol and the English coast is appealing to residents.
It’s less than ten miles to Bristol, which can be reached in just over ten minutes with a train from Nailsea & Backwell station to the south of town. Seaside resort Weston-super-Mare is around 15 miles away, a train journey of just 20 minutes if you want to breathe in some fresh sea air. The M5 motorway passes not far from Nailsea, while Bristol Airport is only around five miles away when you want to go on holiday.
There’s a selection of schools in the local area if you have children, including St Francis Catholic Primary, Kingshill Cof E and Grove Junior school for youngsters. Meanwhile at secondary level, Nailsea School is a specialist technology and media arts college which has a sixth form and around 1,200 students in total.
