The local area
With its name coming from the Welsh for ‘bright fort’, it’s no surprise Gloucester has a long history. With origins dating back to the Roman Empire, the city is home to a number of hugely important buildings, including the famous and celebrated Gloucester Cathedral. That’s not to say it isn’t a thoroughly modern place though, with all your favourite high street stores and restaurants calling Gloucester home, alongside an excellent selection of independents.
Gloucester is the county town of Gloucestershire, an area that encompasses neighbouring Stroud and Cheltenham, as well as much of the stunning Cotswolds Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. The M5 motorway runs just east of the city, offering fast access to nearby Bristol, or northwards towards much of England. There’s a train station in Central Gloucester, with services running to major cities like Cardiff and London, while the closest airport is Bristol Airport – around an hour away.
If you’ve little ones to think about, primary school options in the area include Kingsholm CofE Primary and St. Mary’s Catholic Primary. Local secondary schools include Sir Thomas Rich’s school – rated as outstanding by Ofsted – as well as The Crypt School, which has a history dating back to the 16th Century.
