The local area

Dorset has long been inhabited by humans, with evidence of Neolithic settlement in the county. From Celtic tribes to Roman conquering, Saxon settlement and Viking raids, coastal Dorset has seen plenty of action over the years. The county’s landscapes range from picturesque stretches of coastline including the striking Jurassic Coast, to chalk downs and steep limestone ridges, making Dorset a great place to live if you like to explore the great outdoors.

As a rural county with a strong agricultural heritage, there aren’t any motorways in Dorset, with the closest being the M5 which passes to the west of the county, and the M27 which starts near Southampton and leads to the M3 and on to London. Major trunk roads such as the A31, A35 and A303 connect different parts of Dorset to each other, while two main railway lines link the county to London. There are plenty of bus services around Dorset, which has two passenger seaports and an airport in Bournemouth.

Most of Dorset’s education is covered by Dorset County Council, which mainly operates a two tier system of primary and secondary schools. There’s a wide range of options for parents with children to take into account, including a selection of privately funded independent schools and boarding schools. Further education colleges are available in most of the county’s biggest towns, while Bournemouth has its own university if you’re looking for higher education facilities.
