With a history stretching back to prehistoric times, the Romans built a garrison in the local area, which led to a settlement that boasted an aqueduct and amphitheatre. Dorchester is on the banks of the River Frome to the south of the Dorset Downs, and not far from the English south coast. The town has two railway stations, Dorchester South and Dorchester West, which connects it to cities such as Bournemouth, Southampton, Bristol and London. The A35 passes through the south of Dorchester, running east to west and linking the town to places such as Poole and Christchurch, while the A37 heads north to Yeovil and Bristol.
Dorchester has a three tier education system, and there are 13 first schools in the area including Damers First School and St Mary’s Catholic First School. The three middle schools include Dorchester Middle School on Queen’s Avenue. The Thomas Hardye School is also on Queen’s Avenue, and is the town’s only upper school, providing education for children aged 13 to 18.
