The local area

Cheltenham is of course renowned for the flagship Gold Cup horse racing event, but there is naturally plenty more to the town than this. There are numerous examples of notable Regency architecture, including the Municipal Offices, while the Wilson art gallery and museum is another well worth a visit. A major draw of the town is the captivating countryside that dominates the area, with Cheltenham an ideal place to base yourself when looking to enjoy the Cotswolds.

On the other side of town from the Cotswolds the M5 motorway passes to link Cheltenham with Bristol and Exeter in the south, and Birmingham to the north. The A40 heads east to Oxford where the M40 can also be picked up to reach London. The capital is around a two hour train journey from Cheltenham Spa station, with direct services available. It’s also fairly easy to reach more local towns like Gloucester and Stroud.

For families with children, Naunton Park, Gotherington and Great Rissington rate highly among the primary school options, while notable secondary schools include Pate’s Grammar, Balcarras and Cleeve School. Cheltenham also plays host to a number of the University of Gloucestershire’s campuses.
