The local area

Ramsgate has humble origins as a small fishing and farming hamlet, with the first mention of the town coming in the latter part of the 13th century. Work began on building the town’s harbour in 1749 and took a hundred years to fully complete, going on to be an important place due to its close proximity to mainland Europe. Renowned artist Vincent van Gogh moved to Ramsgate for a period, which nowadays has plenty of modern amenities to complement the lovely coastal scenery.

There are two railway stations in the local area where you can catch trains from, Ramsgate and Dumpton Park. It only takes around ten minutes to hop over to nearby seaside town Margate, while it’s 20 minutes to Canterbury and as quick as an hour and a quarter to London St Pancras. A network of A roads connects Ramsgate to other parts of the southeast coast, with the nearest major motorway the M20 which can be used to continue on to the M25. If you’re interested in boating, the Port of Ramsgate has a 700 berth marina and a ferry terminal.

There’s a good choice of schools in the area for families with children to take into account, including St Ethelbert’s Catholic Primary, Newlands Primary and Newington Primary. Chatham House Grammar, Clarendon House Grammar and the Royal Harbour Academy are among the options for older pupils, while St Lawrence College is an independent day and boarding school.
