The local area
Portsmouth is the UK’s only island city, and has been a significant port for centuries thanks to its strong strategic position. It’s possible to trace the city’s history back to Roman times, while Portsmouth has the world’s oldest dry dock and played an important role in a number of wars and invasions. The modern city puts the lovely waterfront to great use and there are plenty of cultural draws to keep you occupied in town, including theatres like the New Theatre Royal and the Guildhall music venue.
Portsmouth sits just 64 miles southwest of London, and less than 20 miles to the southeast of Southampton. While taking a train for just over an hour and a half may be a little too far for a daily commute to the capital, there are trains to Southampton that take just over half an hour which is a similar time to the journey by road. The M27 motorway connects Portsmouth and Southampton, while the A3 heads north and the A27 east towards other parts of the south coast. The nearby town of Havant is only a short distance away.
There are some excellent schools in the area if you have children, with top primary options including Corpus Christi, St John’s Cathedral and Copnor Junior School. Springfield School in Drayton, Cosham’s Redwood Park School and Admiral Lord Nelson School are among the secondary options. The University of Portsmouth caters for older students, and has numbers of around 20,000.
