The local area

The area in which Basingstoke lies boasts a rich heritage that can point to Neolithic settlement, while there have even been Palaeolithic finds in the region. There has been a regular Wednesday market in Basingstoke since the early part of the 13th century, with the town experiencing major growth after the Second World War due to the overcrowding of London. The Festival Place shopping centre brought a new lease of life when it opened in 2002, with the town centre now offering a great selection of shops, bars, restaurants and cafes, including a cinema and sports centre.

Basingstoke also offers a great location, thanks to its setting within commuting distance of a range of cities that includes London, Reading, Southampton and Oxford. There are rail services to the capital’s London Waterloo that take just 45 minutes, while it’s just over 15 minutes on the train to Reading. The M3 motorway passes to the south of Basingstoke, linking the town to Southampton on the south coast and London to the northeast. Southampton and Heathrow Airport are both approximately 30 miles away from town.

There is a superb range of schools in the area for families to consider, with Oakley CofE Junior School, Preston Candover CofE Primary and Castle Hill Junior School on Winklebury Way among the options for younger children. Bishop Challoner Catholic Secondary School, Cranbourne Business and Enterprise College and Sutton Road’s Dove House School are among the choices at secondary level.
