The local area

With a recorded history dating back to the Domesday Book of 1086 when it was called Recedham Manor, Rochdale was granted a royal charter in the middle of the 13th century. It was a flourishing, wealthy town by the 18th century thanks to its prominence in the woollen trade, and saw further significant growth during the Industrial Revolution as a major mill town. An important part of the cooperative movement, nowadays Rochdale is mainly a residential town and has a great location within Greater Manchester.

Less than ten miles from the centre of Manchester, train services to the city’s Victoria station take just 20 minutes from Rochdale. Oldham is only around five miles to the south, and can be reached via the A627(M), which also leads to the M62 for easy access to Leeds in the east and Liverpool to the west. You can also use this road to head towards the M60 ring road, which loops around Manchester on the way to the city’s airport, which is less than 25 miles from Rochdale and accessible via the Metrolink tram system. It’s also relatively easy to reach nearby towns such as Middleton, Bury and Ashton.

There’s a wide range of schools in Rochdale for parents with children to take into consideration, with some of the highest rated schools for younger pupils including Brimrod Primary, Sacred Heart RC Primary and Lowerplace Primary. Falinge Park High, Kingsway Park High and Matthew Moss High are among the secondary options, while Rochdale Sixth Form College provides further education facilities.
