Ellesmere Port was founded at what was supposed to be the opening of the Ellesmere Canal in the 18th century, but this project was never completed. The opening of the Manchester Ship Canal towards the end of the next century brought huge growth to the area along with the Stanlow Oil Refinery in the 1920s. The large industries remain in Ellesmere Port along with a chemical works and attractions such as the vast Cheshire Oaks Designer Outlet and Blue Planet Aquarium.

Ellesmere Port offers a great location close to Liverpool, and there are trains to the city that take around 40 minutes. Services to Manchester meanwhile take around an hour and 20 minutes, while Chester can be reached in under 40 minutes. The M53 skirts around the edge of town, heading south towards Chester and the M56 motorway which can be used to get to Manchester. Liverpool John Lennon Airport is approximately 30 minutes from Ellesmere Port by car, while Manchester Airport is a similar journey.

There are some excellent schools in the area for families with children to consider; primary options include St Bernard’s Catholic Primary on Sherbourne Road, Wolverham Primary and Nursery School and Whitby Heath Primary. Choices at secondary level include Ellesmere Port Catholic High School, Capenhurst Grange School in Great Sutton and Whitby High School.
