The local area

The headland that overlooks the mouth of the Tyne means that the area has held strategic value as far back as the Iron Age, and also encompasses Roman occupation and importance up to the Second World War. The centre of town boasts an array of popular pubs, cafes and restaurants, while the town’s beaches and excellent surfing bring a wonderful outdoors feel to Tynemouth.

The town is well connected to nearby Newcastle, with the Metro service taking just over 20 minutes to reach the city, making Tynemouth great for commuting. The A1 road is around 20 minutes from town, with a journey to Sunderland taking around half an hour and Durham 40 minutes. Newcastle Airport lies less than 15 miles away by road; a trip that can be done in around 45 minutes with the Metro. Other local towns like Morpeth, Washington and Gateshead are fairly easy to get to.

There are some excellent schools in the area for families with children to contemplate, with primary options including Percy Park Road’s Priory Primary, St Mary’s Roman Catholic Primary and Waterville Primary. Choices at secondary level include John Spence Community High and Marden High, while nearby Whitley Bay High School is also highly rated. Newcastle University is a great option for higher education, found just a short Metro ride away from Tynemouth.
