The local area

A coastal city at the mouth of the River Wear, Sunderland grew from its origins as three separate settlements. It expanded significantly to become a major port, with an emphasis on trading coal and salt. The city has seen a great deal of regeneration over recent decades, and is an exciting place to live with lots of culture and attractions to enjoy.

Despite sitting right on the coast, Sunderland has strong transport links including road, rail and air. The A1(M) motorway passes to the west of the city centre heading past cities like Leeds and Sheffield on its way to London, while Newcastle Airport is around 20 miles away. Direct trains to neighbouring Newcastle take around 20 minutes, or you can use the Tyne and Wear Metro system which was extended to Sunderland in 2002.

There’s a wide range of options in the local area if you need to send your children to school, with Hudson Road, Dame Dorothy, Mill Hill and Grange Park among the choices at primary level. There are around 20 secondary schools to take your pick from, including the high achieving Sunderland High, the Catholic St Anthony’s for girls and St Aidan’s for boys, and Castle View Enterprise Academy. The city’s University of Sunderland is highly rated for higher education, and caters for more than 17,000 students.
