The local area

Morpeth has a strong strategic position at a crossing point of the River Wansbeck, although there isn’t much evidence of settlement in the area prior to the Middle Ages. The town was granted a market charter at the end of the 12th century, and the market is still held every week to this day. With a range of interesting landmarks complementing the surrounding countryside and nearby coast, there’s plenty to keep you occupied in the area.

Morpeth also has a strong location in the North East, just 15 miles to the north of Newcastle. There are trains to the city which take just over 15 minutes, while it takes just over an hour to get to Edinburgh and three hours to get to London. The A1 road passes just to the west of Morpeth and the A1(M) motorway to the south, offering great road links, and it’s possible to get to other local towns like South Shields, Sunderland, Washington and Tynemouth fairly easily.

There’s a three-tiered education system in Morpeth, with local infant schools including Morpeth First School in Goosehill and Abbeyfields First School in Kirkhill. Morpeth Chantry and Morpeth Newminster are two middle schools which sit right beside each other, while the King Edward VI School provides education for students aged between 13 and 18, and has a history which stretches back to the mid-16th century
