The local area

With human settlement in the local vicinity dating back thousands of years, the Romans held control of the Woodbridge area during their occupation of Britain. When they left in the fifth century, Woodbridge was a significant Anglo-Saxon settlement, the people who gave East Anglia its name. Sutton Hoo is an important Anglo-Saxon burial site close to Woodbridge, which contains a notable ship burial. If boats are your thing, there are facilities to enjoy the waters of the River Deben, which also offers lots of opportunities for great walks.

If you prefer to do your travel by road, Woodbridge lies on the A12 which heads north towards Lowestoft and Great Yarmouth, and south towards Ipswich. Less than ten miles away, trains to Ipswich take under 20 minutes. If you’re going on holiday, the nearest major airports are Norwich and Stansted, which are both around 50 miles away from Woodbridge.

If you have children to put through education, the choice of primary schools includes Woodbridge Primary, Kyson Primary and St Mary’s CofE. Farlingaye High School is the town’s only option at secondary level, providing education for pupils aged up to 18. Woodbridge School is a mixed independent school with junior and senior departments, while just over ten miles out of town in Framlingham you’ll find Thomas Mills High School.
