The local area

Welwyn Garden City was founded in the 1920s as the second garden city in England. This meant it was designed with surrounding greenbelt areas that give the town a lovely feel, with plenty of open spaces and public parks. It was also one of the first of the new towns which were designated in 1948, aiming to relocate people badly affected by the Second World War. The modern town has plenty of amenities including the Howard Centre shopping mall, and a range of sports and leisure facilities.

One of Welwyn Garden City’s major draws is its proximity to London. There are trains which take just 20 over minutes to reach the capital’s King’s Cross station, making it an ideal place to live for commuters to the city. The A1(M) motorway passes by the western fringe of town, while London Luton Airport is just over ten miles away when you want to go on holiday. The good road network makes it easy to get to nearby towns such as Hertford, St Albans, Stevenage, Hitchin, Watford and Hemel Hempstead.

There are some excellent schools in the area for families with children to choose between, including Templewood Primary, St John’s CofE and Panshanger Primary. Secondary options include Sir Frederic Osborn School, which is a specialist Sports College, Monks Walk School, a specialist Science College, and Stanborough School, which specialises in maths and computing.
