The local area

With a history stretching back to Roman times, Stevenage is a town that has seen its population grow enormously over the past century. It was established as a new town in 1946, where a ring of towns around London were granted this status following the end of World War II. Modern Stevenage benefits from a range of leisure facilities, while there’s plenty of shops around Queensway and the Westgate.

It is the proximity to London that is a major draw for many when it comes to living in Stevenage, with the capital lying around 30 miles south of town. Trains to London Kings Cross station take only around 25 minutes, meaning Stevenage is a superb commuter town. The A1(M) motorway passes to the west of the town centre, offering easy access to London and Sheffield and Leeds in the north, while London Luton Airport is only around 10 miles away from Stevenage. It’s easy to get to nearby towns such as Hitchin, Welwyn Garden City, Hertford, St Albans and Hemel Hempstead.

There are plenty of schools in the area for families with children to consider, many of them built after the Second World War to cope with the influx of Londoners preferring to commute to the capital. Bennington C of E, St Margaret Clitherow Primary and Ashtree Primary and Nursery are among the options for younger children, while the choices at secondary level include Greenside School, the Nobel School and the Thomas Alleyne Academy, which can trace its heritage back to 1558.
