The town’s earliest reference dates back to the year 731 when it was mentioned as Herutford in the Ecclesiastical History of the English People. It also hs good road links to nearby towns such as St Albans, Welwyn Garden City, Hemel Hempstead, Hitchin and Stevenage.

There are some excellent schools in the area for families with children to take into account, including Abel Smith School, Ponsbourne St Mary’s CofE and St Joseph’s Catholic School at primary level. Simon Balle School, Richard Hale School and the Sele School are among the secondary options, while special needs schools include Pinewood and Myddleton.
