The local area

The town’s earliest reference dates back to the year 731 when it was mentioned as Herutford in the Ecclesiastical History of the English People. Since Saxon times Hertford has been Hertfordshire’s county town, and the centre retains its medieval layout to this day. The modern Hertford has held onto its peaceful atmosphere, despite its fabulous location less than 20 miles north of Central London.

It’s this proximity to the capital which makes Hertford popular with commuters, as there are trains to London’s Liverpool Street and King’s Cross stations which take around 50 minutes. The A10 road passes just to the east of town heading south to the M25 and the capital, while the A1(M) runs to the west. When you want to go on holiday, both Stansted and London Luton Airport are approximately 20 miles away. It also hs good road links to nearby towns such as St Albans, Welwyn Garden City, Hemel Hempstead, Hitchin and Stevenage.

There are some excellent schools in the area for families with children to take into account, including Abel Smith School, Ponsbourne St Mary’s CofE and St Joseph’s Catholic School at primary level. Simon Balle School, Richard Hale School and the Sele School are among the secondary options, while special needs schools include Pinewood and Myddleton.
