The local area
Haverhill’s history can be traced back to at least Saxon times, and the town’s market was mentioned in the Domesday Book of 1086. There was a terrible fire in the second half of the 17th century which wiped out most of the Tudor architecture, but some historical buildings are still standing to this day. Amenities include a decent selection of shops, bars and restaurants, along with the Haverhill Arts Centre, which you’ll find in the Grade II listed town hall.
The town is one of the largest in England that doesn’t have its own train station. However, it is conveniently located close to Stansted Airport, which is just over 20 miles to the south. The A1307 road connects Haverhill to the A11, M11 and Cambridge to the west.
There are some very good schools in the area which will be music to your ears if you have young children. Primary options include Kedington Primary, St Felix RC Primary and Stanley Drapkin Primary, while Samuel Ward Academy is one of the highest rated secondary choices. Castle Manor Academy and Broadlands Hall are the other options at secondary level.
