The local area

Lying on the banks of the River Brain, Braintree can point to over 4,000 years’ worth of history. After its humble origins, by the late 19th century Braintree was a booming agricultural and textile town and reaped the benefits of a railway connection to London. Despite being surrounded by pretty countryside and in touching distance of the English east coast, Braintree remains well connected.

The seaside can be reached by using the A120 road, which heads east towards Colchester and Harwich, and west towards Bishop’s Stortford and the M11. Chelmsford is a quick jaunt down the A131, which heads north to Sudbury. A train to London’s Liverpool Street station will take around an hour, while there are regular bus services that connect Braintree with its neighbouring towns and cities.

There are some good schools in the area to consider if you have children, including Cressing Primary School, White Court School and St Michael’s CofE at primary level. For older children, the secondary options are Gosfield School, Alec Hunter Academy, Tabor Academy and Notley High School, which is where Braintree Sixth Form is located. The Edith Borthwick School is a special needs school for children of all ages.
